Credit Union Myth #1: I’m only eligible to join a credit union by working for a certain employer.
While credit unions began by serving a specific group of employees, nowdays many consumers are eligible to join a credit union based on where they live, work, worship or attend school.
Credit Union Myth #2: I don’t have convenient access to my funds.
Co-Op Shared Branching now provides credit union members with convenient access to their funds all across Mississippi, the United States, and beyond.
Credit Union Myth #3: When I leave my job that qualified me for credit union membership, I can no longer be a credit union member.
Credit Unions operate under the rule, “once a member, always a member”.
Credit Union Myth #4: Credit Unions don’t offer the variety of products and services that the big banks offer.
While credit unions initially only offered savings and loans, nowdays many credit unions offer checking accounts, certificates of deposit, car loans, credit cards, personal loans, mortgage loans, online banking, online billpay, and mobile apps just to name a few.
This year, Mississippi credit unions have joined forces with the Mississippi Credit Union Association and the Credit Union National Association to spread the credit union message through a digital cooperative awareness campaign, Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union®. In fact, seventy-one credit unions in Mississippi have joined this collaborative effort and together with the mission of the Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union® campaign, we want to dispel the myths that (1) people can’t join, and (2) they can’t access their money. Consumers in the market for financial services may see Open Your Eyes to a Credit Union® while they are online. We invite everyone to visit the website YourMoneyFurther.com to find out more about which credit union is the right fit for you.
Jackson Area Federal Credit Union, with locations in Jackson and Byram, is proud to be one of the seventy-one credit unions reaching consumers in need of financial services, through this collaborative effort.
