Mother's Day Thoughts

On Mother's Day, and the other holidays and anniversary dates of both good and bad times, we remember the people and times that have been a part of our lives. This photo is of my mom Laquita Bell Neill, me as an infant, my grandmother Dorothy Parker Bell and great grandmother Emily Anne Payne Parker taken in front of the family home in Carrollton. I have been fortunate to have shaped by many good influences in my life and that caused me to be different and to think and act for myself without regard to what others may think. My mom would be at the top of that list of influencers. My mom was a teacher for many years and each of the stories she has told of the adversities and triumphs that students had over the decades gave insight into the reality what lives are actually like especially in a small town. The calendar puts Mother's Day and High School Graduation in almost the same week. The stories my mom has told over the years are ones I will always remember - the adversities, the girls who became pregnant in high school, students who left town after graduation because they were gay, students who were abused and beaten, students who were bullied because they were different or were a different color, those who took their own lives, and the triumphs, those with academic difficulties who finished school, those who found a way to go to college, those who had a dysfunctional family but succeeded with one of their own, and so on. One of the most important things I have learned from her is not to judge others whose stories we do not fully know and understand and to speak out against what is wrong at the right time and place. Each experience we have, each person we ever know, each opportunity we ever have, whether good or bad, whether successful or a failure, becomes a part of who we are.

The Gilded Age Of Social Media Is Not A Good Thing

It is a good idea for the Emmerich newspapers to try to develop an alternative social media platform. With the recent sale of Twitter, all of the major social media sites are now under the tight control of a small number of billionaires. Nearly every aspect of life is now controlled by a small number of companies Apple, Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, Google, Amazon, Walmart, Microsoft, Dollar General and so on. Every person spends nearly all of their money every day of every week with the mega companies which in turn help the rich get richer. Nearly every thing that people read, see and hear, every email they get, every phone call they make, most of the food they eat, what they do in their lives is influenced by the invisible hands of a small group of people behind the curtain. There is a good article in the Mississippi Free Press this week which outlines how we are in the Second Gilded Age and how this small, new group of oligarchs use their vast wealth to control the media, influence public opinion, and keep the population under control though an endless list of manufactured issues. People have a choice, they could support small businesses and local media.

A Day Without Electricity

Entergy had a planned all day outage for our neighborhood so they could do an overhaul of the substation. They cut the power off at 7:52 AM and turned it back on at 5:40 PM. I had the generators and power banks ready but a day with no electricity is a challenge. It took 3 of the long, orange extension cords to power the fridge, freezer, tv, laptop, tablet, and coffee pot. About halfway through the day the Wen generator developed some type of mechanical problem and shut down. I got it started again and then it shut down again. After that I lowered the usage and moved everything to the other generator for the rest of the day. While not a prepper, being in a frequent tornado, hurricane, and ice storm zone has prompted me to have at least a minimal amount of preparation. It was eerie when with no postal mail and no stores or gas stations open on a Saturday.

Mortgage Rates Go Over 5%

With the 28 basis point jump of 30-year, fixed-rate mortgage to 5% for the week ending April 14, it nearly doubled the rate of 2.65% from January 2021. This increase is after the first of 6 interest rate increases that are planned by the Federal Reserve to try to control inflation. Some lenders have started to down-value properties and more mortgage applications are being declined. With inflation at a 40 year high and mortgage rates at a 10 year high a cooling off of real estate markets may be ahead. Recessions historically follow inflation. It is still in fresh in mind that the real estate highs of 2006 were followed by a crash and recession in 2008.

Remembering the old Oil Review newspaper

We are archiving more things to keep today. Found a copy of Barry Goldwater's Arizona Portraits, more art posters, and some copies of the now defunct Southeastern Oil Review which was published for 67 years by the Ishee

family in Jackson. My dad and Elizabeth Spencer's dad were the only subscribers to the Oil Review in Carroll County and saw each other most mornings at the post office.
