The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating an officer-involved shooting involving the U.S. Marshal Service that occurred Monday morning at a residence on Mill Street in Indianola.
According to Sunflower County Coroner Heather Burton, the deceased has been identified as Demetric Bryant, 25, of Indianola. Burton said that his body has been sent to the State Medical Examiner's Office for autopsy.

The widow of the late Aubrey Brent Jr. asks that the city council rescind their votes that allowed another name to be added as a memorialization honor to Prentiss Street.
During Monday’s city council meeting, Denise Brent said adding another honorary name to the city street was “disrespectful” to her and to the memory of her late husband, adding that she was not personally contacted prior to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen approving the addition.

Interim department heads for Yazoo City’s public works and fire departments were named during Monday’s city council meeting.
Fire Chief Ricky Harris and Public Works Director Robert Green both announced their upcoming retirements and submitted their resignation letters to the Board of Mayor and Aldermen earlier this month.
Green’s last day was March 24, and Harris’ will be on March 31.

A fire, shown here on Friday, has expanded to over 3,000 acres in Carroll County between Coila and Vaiden.
Updated at 2 p.m. with information from the Mississippi Forestry Commission.
Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves issued a statement Saturday morning stating that the size of the fire in Carroll County has increased to 3,000 acres and has forced the evacuations along three county roads.

City leaders have accepted the sole bid provided by a contractor to remove debris caused by the severe weather that struck Yazoo City earlier this year.
During Monday’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting, the board accepted the only bid from Holliday Construction out of Poplarville.
“We will have to come back for the board to approve a contract too though,” added Board Attorney Lilli Evans-Bass. “We can call a special meeting as soon as we get a contract. The contract will have to be approved before they can start.”

A Yazoo City man was sentenced to serve 35 years in prison after pleading guilty to a drive-by shooting in the summer of 2023.
Akyrion Phillips entered a guilty plea during his trial in Yazoo County last week, according to District Attorney Akillie Malone-Oliver. The presiding judge accepted the plea as an open plea, sentencing Phillips for two counts of aggravated assault and one count of shooting into an occupied dwelling.
Phillips will serve 35 years of his 50-year sentence.

Residents were evacuated from 10 Carroll County homes Friday because of a fire that covered 2,400 acres.
A fire blazing through more than 2,000 acres in Carroll County led to evacuations from 10 homes Friday, a state fire official said Friday afternoon.
Residents of homes on County Roads 163, 218 and 360 were being evacuated, Chris Burnham with the Mississippi Forestry Commission said just before 5 p.m. Friday.
The fire encompassed 2,400 acres, an increase of 600 acres from what Burnham had reported at 4:10 p.m. Friday, when 45% of the blaze was contained.

Juelz Khalil Jordan of Yazoo City served as a page for the Mississippi Senate. Pages generally run errands for officials and Senate staff. Juelz is pictured with Lieutenant Governor C. Delbert Hosemann, Jr., and Senator Joseph C. Thomas Sr., who sponsored his visit. Juelz is the son of Arnelia Hampton and attends Yazoo City High School. When asked about the week, Juelz said, "I would say this experience was very eye-opening. Creating friendships with different people in spaces I thought I’d never be in is warming.

In a moving ceremony filled with gratitude, reverence, and celebration, Rev. Dr. Clifton Jackson, President and Founder of the Lillie Mae Jackson Scholarship Foundation, presented special awards recognizing faithful Christian service to Pastor Rev. The Yazoo Herald brought home eight awards from the Mississippi Press Association’s 2025 Advertising Division Better Newspaper Contest, including two first-place honors.
Editor and Publisher Jamie Patterson won first place in the Institutional Ad category and Holiday Ad category with her ad highlighting CF Industries’ Memorial Day appreciation.
Patterson won second place awards in Institutional and in Editorial Special Editions for the Herald’s Salute to Veterans. She also won Honorable Mention awards in General Retail and Institutional categories.

The Yazoo County Tax Assessor Denise Robertson and staff would like to remind homeowners the Deadline for filing Homestead Exemption is April 1, 2026.
Also, personal property renditions are due by April 1 as well.

Yazoo County received some good news this week with a bill heading to the governor’s office for the construction of a levee along the river for flood control.
“This project will help protect 123,000 acres of agricultural land and Delta communities from flooding when the Mississippi River rises and backs up the Yazoo River,” said Lt. Governor Delbert Hoseman. “Flooding has been an ongoing challenge in this part of our state, so this project is long overdue. We are glad to help move this forward.”

Yazooans voted last week in the 2026 midterm Republican and Democratic primaries for U.S. House and U.S. Senate seats to decide which candidates will face off in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election.
Locally, 14.67 percent voter turnout was reported with 2,746 Yazooans casting their ballots. There are 18,798 registered voters in Yazoo County.

Two suspects remain behind bars on murder charges. Xzavian Gainwell and Tylan Johnson, both 19, remain in custody at the Yazoo County Correctional Facility on murder charges.
Jeffrey Johnson was pronounced dead by paramedics from a gunshot wound, according to Yazoo County Coroner Ricky Shivers. The victim was pronounced dead at 1:25 p.m. on March 9 in the parking lot of Graystone Apartments on West Second Street.
A female victim was also struck by gunfire, but her injury was considered non-life threatening.

Attorneys defending Ted “Teddy” DiBiase Jr., the only person to face trial in a welfare fraud scandal that has rocked Mississippi over the last six years, kept their case succinct.
They began Tuesday and rested Wednesday afternoon, the 18th day of trial, after calling just four witnesses. DiBiase opted not to take the stand. On Thursday, the judge will deliver the jury’s instructions, both sides will present closing arguments and jurors will begin deliberating.
