Yazoo City main fire station collapsed Saturday night with rubble from the historic building falling into Washington Street next to City Hall.
Police on the scene said no one was inside the building when in collapsed.
South Washington Street and Jefferson Street near city hall are blocked at this time.
More details will be published when they are available.

Visitors in 2025 to the Medgar & Myrlie Evers Home National Monument described powerful tours from National Park Service rangers, but people who visited the house last month say they walked away puzzled by omissions both to the couple’s story and the motives of Medgar Evers’ assassin.

Charges arrived for a few suspects involved in what investigators believe are connected shootings within Yazoo City. As the community continued to recover from the recent devastating winter storm, the following days were filled with three separate shootings, occurring within 24 hours of each other.
The first incident occurred on Jan. 28 at the Citgo Gas Station on Eleventh Street around 3 p.m. Officers first responded to the scene after receiving reports of a fight at the local gas station. The reports of a fight soon developed into reports of shots fired.

A rescue effort lasting a few hours on a Yazoo County farm this week ended with success thanks to a complete team effort from local responders and surrounding agencies.
“This rescue effort is why building relationships with neighboring agencies is so important and crucial for rural emergency response,” said Jack Willingham, county emergency management director. “We pick up the phone, and our brothers come. We thank all who assisted in this incident.”

Veteran law enforcement officer Patrick Jaco resigned last week as Yazoo City’s police chief to pursue another career path that he believes is in the best interest of his family.
“I want the public to know that this was not an easy decision for me,” Jaco said. “I continue to be a supporter for Yazoo City, this community and the police department. I want to see the continued improvement for the department and the city.”

Keyondra Taylor is the daughter of Yourlunda Stiff and Marlon Taylor, and the granddaughter of Stella Hackett, Major Hackett, Dave Taylor, Lula Taylor, and Alexander Stiff. She graduated from Belhaven University in December 2024 with a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership. In August 2025, she also completed her Master Certification in Human Resources. Keyondra was accepted into Belhaven University’s Doctoral Program in Business Administration, with a specialization in Health Administration, which she began in August 2024.

With over a century of stories and memories, Mr. Davis Gary certainly had a story to share. The beloved retired banker passed away last week at a remarkable 104 years old.
The Yazoo County native was a leader in the local banking industry and a community servant who was dedicated to his hometown. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Gary, he was a graduate of Bentonia High School and East Central Junior College.

Yazoo City police officers arrested an escaped convict from Louisiana last week after receiving a tip from a resident that he was acting suspicious.
Officers Desi Parker and Mylan Smith originally responded to an unrelated call about two men dressed in black, pacing around the Double Quick store on Jerry Clower Boulevard last Thursday.
“They were unable to locate those two men, but while they were patrolling the area a resident gave them a tip about another man,” said Chief Patrick Jaco.

Yazoo City voters will return to the polls on Feb. 23 for the Democratic primary runoff election for the Ward 1 alderman post.
The runoff election for the Ward 1 post will include incumbent Charlie Jenkins and challenger Deyoung Haymer. Unofficial results from Monday’s municipal primary election showed Jenkins with 114 votes versus Haymer’s 86 votes.

A suspect wanted in connection to a Yazoo City shooting last month is now in the custody of the Yazoo City Police Department.
Tagii Nellums was wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred on January 28, 2026 at approximately 2:40 p.m. at the Citgo Gas Station located at 100 East 11th Street.
Investigators considered Nellums armed and dangerous.
However, Nellums was taken into custody last night at about 6:30 p.m. More information will appear in the next edition of The Herald.

The Yazoo City Police Department is seeking the whereabouts of Tagii Nellums, who is wanted in connection with a shooting that occurred on January 28, 2026 at approximately 2:40 p.m. at the Citgo Gas Station located at 100 East 11th Street.
Investigators warn the public that Nellums is considered armed and dangerous.
Anyone with information regarding his location is urged to contact the Yazoo City Police Department immediately at 662-746-1131 or call 911.
