Nineteen candidates have qualified for the upcoming Yazoo City elections, including sixteen within the Democratic party and three Independent candidates.
Within the upcoming municipal election, the posts with the most interest are the mayoral post and the Ward 1 alderman seat with six candidates each vying for the posts.
For mayor, Democratic candidates include Ward 2 Alderman Macklyn Austin, Joe Dearman, Ron Johnson and Sir Johnathan Rucker. Independent candidates include Calvin Thomas and Woodrow Walker.

A $2.8 million dollar contract with an energy savings group has one county supervisor skeptical, in addition to the county administrator wondering if Yazoo County can afford it without possibly raising taxes.
“This might have to raise taxes or shorten somebody else’s budget,” said Supervisor Willie Wright. “I’m not down with that.”

The Manchester Academy Mavericks improved to 6-5 on the season after posting a 60-17 blowout win over Indianola Academy last week.
The Lady Mavericks also picked up a 59-28 victory and improved to 6-9 for the year.
Alley Ables led the Lady Mavs with 17 points followed in double figures by Angel Rae Carpenter with 15 and Ellie Carpenter with 13.
Avery Austin chipped in with eight, Morgan Foster added four and Molly McBride rounded out the scoring with two.

A Lady Raider Brynn Blackstock hit a major milestone last week against Porter’s Chapel when she scored her 2,000th career point while also helping lead the Lady Raiders to a 75-14 victory.
Leta Greco led the way, scoring a game-high 20 points, followed by Blackstock with 19, and Emma Middleton with 12.
Addy Cader and Sydnie Davis had eight apiece, Maci Lowery had six, and Ava Grace Meeks chipped in with two.
The Lady Raiders also defeated Discovery last week 63-10.
Greco and Lowery notched double figures with 15 and 13 points respectively.

Another lawsuit has emerged in the aftermath of presidential hires at Jackson State University.
Jerome Tinker, who serves in a leadership position in JSU’s Alumni Affairs office, is suing former president Marcus Thompon and the university in federal court for being turned down for the position of office director.

Victoria Love, the city of Jackson’s rental registration manager, scrunched her eyebrows together into a deep line, mimicking the confused expression she said Mayor John Horhn made the first time she introduced herself to him in 2024. He was a state senator at the time.
“I’m giving him my card, and he just pauses and looks at me and is like, ‘Rental registration? What is it that you do besides getting the rentals to register?’” Love said.

he Yazoo City Indians got their revenge on the Yazoo County Panthers and avenged last week’s loss with a 49-37 victory to even the season series at 1-1.
The Lady Indians completed the season sweep of their rival with a 34-17 victory.
The Indians improved to 10-5 on the season, and the Lady Indians improved to 6-9.
The Panthers fell to 5-6 while the Lady Panthers dropped to 3-9.
In boys’ action, a trio of Indians paced the way in scoring led by Keiron Davis with 12 points and Travis Jones and Jacorion Taylor with 10 apiece.

In 2001-02 he was the chief economist of Bush’s Council of Economic Advisers, and from 2003-05 he was director of the Congressional Budget Office. He also was the chief economic policy adviser for Sen. John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, which further excludes him from influence with President Trump’s people.

The Mississippi Court of Appeals has ordered a new murder trial for Tameshia Shelton, a 47-year-old mother of four who has long insisted on her innocence.
Judges vacated her conviction and ordered the new trial. The state attorney general’s office has not said whether it plans to appeal the ruling to the Mississippi Supreme Court.

Calls for Thompson to resign have come from within Mississippi and across the nation.
Congressman Bennie Thompson (D) was in damage control mode Friday after referring to the ambush-style attack in Washington, D.C. in November on two West Virginia National Guardsmen as an “unfortunate accident” during a hearing of the House Homeland Security Committee on Thursday.
The attack left Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom dead and Air Force Staff Sgt. Andrew Wolfe in critical condition.

China has over 230 times the shipbuilding capacity than the U.S. The Navy wants U.S. shipbuilders to improve schedules, increase capacity, and reduce costs.
As China continues to rapidly build out its naval shipbuilding operations, expanding its fleet at a faster pace than the U.S., Navy Secretary John Phelan is encouraging American shipyards to “act like we’re at war” in terms of production and readiness.
The Office of Naval Intelligence reports that China currently has over 230 times the shipbuilding capacity than the U.S.
