Ballet Mississippi recently hosted Ballet and Blues 2026, the organization’s premier annual fundraising event, at The Plant Venue. The event honored 62 years of Ballet Mississippi’s impact on the cultural life in Mississippi, through performances, professional training for young dancers, and a commitment to education, outreach, and audience development.
Proceeds from the event directly support Ballet Mississippi’s dancers, productions, and mission-driven programming. Attending the event were (from left) Cole Brundege, Jack Holmes, and Lex Taylor Rick Brundege.

Eloise Lanier Dean Cumbaa was born in Greenville, Miss., in 1929 to Charles Otho Dean and Geraldine Rousseau Dean of Leland. She died peacefully at her home at 97 years of age.
Eloise graduated from Leland Public School with honors. She attended Randolph-Macon Woman’s College in Lynchburg, Va., and received a degree in English and history education. After graduation, she returned to Mississippi and had her first job teaching in an elementary school in Vicksburg.

Nancy Ponder Brand died peacefully on March 28, 2026. She joyfully entered the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who was the centerpiece of her life. Her deep faith and trust in Jesus defined her days and touched everyone she knew.
She was born on August 22, 1923, in Yazoo County to Bessie Winstead Ponder and John Lewis Ponder II at her maternal grandparents’ home, because Nancy's mother was playing the piano at the local revival service and simply did not have time to get to the hospital!

The River Hills Open returns to River Hills Club this week, showcasing elite professional women’s tennis while reintroducing a key element of the professional game: trained ball kids.
For the first time in many years, 32 junior members of River Hills Club will take the court as official ball persons, bringing energy, precision, and professionalism to match play. The group has undergone structured training in anticipation, positioning, and match protocol under the direction of River Hills member Jordan Miller.

George Edward Cain (Edd) was born January 6, 1947, in the old Baptist Hospital in Jackson and passed away March 23, 2026, in Chapel Hill, N.C. He was the son of the late George Judson Cain Jr., and Mary Jane Wallace Cain.
