Nancy Ponder Brand died peacefully on March 28, 2026. She joyfully entered the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, who was the centerpiece of her life. Her deep faith and trust in Jesus defined her days and touched everyone she knew.
She was born on August 22, 1923, in Yazoo County to Bessie Winstead Ponder and John Lewis Ponder II at her maternal grandparents’ home, because Nancy's mother was playing the piano at the local revival service and simply did not have time to get to the hospital!

Ridgeland is in the process of transforming West Jackson Street into a walkable
downtown named the Railroad District.
Cities across the country without historic downtowns or traditional commercial areas are making efforts to create them.
In Mississippi, 80 communities have turned to Mississippi Main Street Association, an economic development organization that specializes in downtown revitalization, for help.
Other towns in the state such as Ridgeland have decided to do it on their own with help from city planners.

Pearl River Valley Water Supply District took back control of the former Rapids on the Reservoir after delinquent payments
The Pearl River Valley Water Supply District once again has control of the property where Rapids on the Reservoir once stood.
The land has been vacant for 15 years since the popular water park was torn down. It’s been five years since plans to develop a baseball training academy on the site were announced but never got off the ground.
Rankin County Chancellor John C. McLaurin issued a judgement last December against P360 Performance Sports in the amount of $507,975, which represents the amount of delinquent lease payments it owed the district.

Mr. and Mrs. Forrest Lee Rogers Davidson
Margaret Roland Cross and Forrest Lee Rogers Davidson were married on December 13 at six o’clock in the evening at the Paris-Yates Chapel at Ole Miss. The ceremony was officiated by Pastor Wes Ingram of Oxford. The bride chose the chapel for a sentimental reason. A stained-glass window there was donated in honor of her maternal great-grandparents, Leah and Roland Adams, when the chapel was built. Her maternal grandmother and her brothers gifted the window to Ole Miss.

Jackson Mayor John Horhn spoke to the Rotary Club of Jackson this past Tuesday.
First of all, it’s great to have a mayor who visits civic clubs like Rotary to engage with constituents, especially engaged ones such as club members.
Sadly, civic club involvement has declined over the last 30 years, just one more bad effect of the rise in social media and tribal inclusiveness.

Ridgeland’s 2025 tax increase is funding improvements to Freedom Ridge Park
Depending upon the approval of the Legislature, Jackson residents could be voting in a referendum this fall that would seek to raise the city’s hotel/motel tax and restaurant tax.
Senate Bill 3106 and House Bill 4011 would authorize the city of Jackson to impose an additional 1 percent tax on hotel/motel rooms and a ½ percent on restaurant sales to fund the Jackson Convention and Visitors Bureau, which is also known as Visit Jackson.
The city currently has a 1 percent tax on hotels, motels, and restaurants, which was extended to July 1, 2026, by the Legislature in 2022.

So far this has been a wild spring in so many ways. We’ve had temperatures in the upper 80s, and we’ve had temperatures in the upper 20s all in a two-week period. These warm days with relatively low amounts of rain have allowed for a lot of progress in our yards. The big question so far has been whether to start adding plants that are tender to the cold. Those plants that were cut back early enough like roses, and most of our perennials, have a lot of tender growth on them. These little cold snaps will set them back a little bit, but I believe they will recover nicely.

I prefer local issues, but the recent international topics are driving everyone’s interest, so I’ll add my two bits.
Unlike many of my friends, I am not a fan of Trump’s personality. I would prefer a more genteel leader like Ronald Reagan. But Trump is the duly elected leader of our nation.
