The removal of an amphitheater concept from a $12.6 million dollar grant had some city leaders questioning what Yazoo City can truly expect from the RAISE Grant.
“All we are getting are some sidewalks for $12 million dollars,” said Alderwoman Elizabeth Thomas.
However, Alma Jones, the city’s grant manager, said the term “amphitheater” was never specified in the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability & Equity (RAISE) Grant application.

Any sealed bids submitted for the Triangle Cultural Center’s restoration project are slated to be opened at the Jan. 12 city council meeting.
The community crosses its fingers that the highly-anticipated project at the historic building will finally begin after what many are calling five years of continued deterioration and kicking the can down the road.

Within the upcoming municipal election, the posts with the most interest are the mayoral post and the Ward 1 alderman seat with six candidates each vying for the posts.
For mayor, Democratic candidates include Ward 2 Alderman Macklyn Austin, Joe Dearman, Ron Johnson and Sir Johnathan Rucker. Independent candidates include Calvin Thomas and Woodrow Walker.

“This might have to raise taxes or shorten somebody else’s budget,” said Supervisor Willie Wright. “I’m not down with that.”

The executive director of the Jackson-Hinds Library System anticipates no cutbacks in service or staff, despite both the city of Jackson and Hinds County reducing their allocations for the 2026 fiscal year.
The Hinds County Board of Supervisors reduced the funding it provides for the library system budget by $125,395 and the Jackson City Council did the same by $37,630.
