Although the paperwork has not been finalized, city leaders have accepted a building donation that could be the answer for the future of a local Boys and Girls Club.
The Board of Mayor and Aldermen accepted the donation of the former Super 10 building, located at 508 N. Washington Street. Board Attorney Lilli Evans-Bass reminded the board awaits the deed execution to transfer the property over to the city of Yazoo City.

Hundreds of children visited Santa’s Workshop at Jackson Academy in December. The Annual Christmas Open House for kindergarten and younger students is sponsored by the Jackson Academy Association. A highlight of the evening came when children visited Mrs. Claus in her kitchen, where they helped bag canned goods to give to families in need during the holidays—helping the youngest Raiders understand serving others. Last week felt like I should have been working in the garden, flying a kite, or wade fishing for crappie. Other than the two weeks of “seasonal” cold weather we experienced, it has been one of the mildest winters on record. Doves are already cooing, frogs are croaking, and turtles are sunning themselves on logs in ponds and creeks. I have noticed daffodils and jonquils emerging from their short winter nap, ready to show off to the world blazing white and yellow petals. In fact, trees are on the verge of bud break with some species already leafing out.

The Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi’s 41st annual Bacchus Ball Gala will take place on Saturday, January 31 at the Country Club of Jackson. The evening will include regional music, Creole cuisine, and a silent auction. Derrick Rucker, 49, passed away on Jan. 8, 2026.
Funeral services will be held on Jan. 17 with Rev. Charlie Latiker officiating under the direction of Century Funeral Home.
Rucker, a gift of light and love, was born on April 10, 1976, in Yazoo City, to the late Barbara Jean Rucker Allen and Leanard Banks. He attended the Yazoo City Public School system, where he was raised. He accepted Christ at an early age at Rose Hill M.B. Church.

I estimate I called over 800 games during my 38 years of officiating high school football. I still run the game clock and occasionally assist with replays. I have lost track of the number of times I have been asked over the past few days what I thought about the final call of the Fiesta Bowl.
A little background is helpful here. I am a Mississippi State graduate. For the 18 years before I enrolled at State, I was a huge Ole Miss fan. And, even today, many of my best friends and referee buddies are Ole Miss grads.

I told Mimi last night that I sure do get myself into some crazy situations. She looked at me like “Really?” We have only known each other for 40 years, so she’s been a part of most of the nutty stories. This will be the beginning of one of the nuttier ones only this time she won’t be with me. By the time this Northside Sun reaches the mailboxes it will be my birthday, Friday the 16th, I will also be deep in Uganda on the equator. Yep, I am off on another life-changing experience but this time with my mother.
