Dr. Brent Smith
Changes in federal financial aid that will become effective later this year could result in medical students, who find themselves burdened with loans to pay for their education choosing to practice higher-paying specialties instead of primary care, which would further impact medical care in underserved areas of the state.
“The big worry is it will drive a financial pressure already there,” said Dr. Brent Smith, a member of the Advocacy Committee of the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians.

I am a Hoosier. I was raised on Indiana athletics, and like most Hoosiers, I am first and foremost a basketball fan. It is in my blood. My grandfather was an Indiana University Academic All-American and my father became the team doctor, which meant long periods of my childhood were spent in the stands of Assembly Hall.
We went to football games too. However, Indiana was known as one of the worst programs in the country. We showed up anyway. We were always expected to respect the athletes, remain humble, and demonstrate character in victory or defeat.

Recently, our church celebrated the retirement of Frieda Lauderdale from driving and coordinating our Meal on Wheels for more than 40 years. For those who do not know what I am talking about, Meals on Wheels (MOW) is a ministry effort organized to deliver hot cooked meals to homebound, often elderly, people in the community. I grew up delivering Meals on Wheels with my mom and I have continued this tradition with my own family. Some of the city’s most needy get a quick visit and a hot cooked meal delivered.
